Sleep dentistry uses intravenous sedation which is given through an injection. It’s also known as IV sedation or twilight dentistry. It makes you relax quickly but you don’t actually go to sleep. Your dentist adjusts the sedation for your individual procedure.
During the procedure you’re conscious but can’t feel pain. When the treatment is finished it will be as though no time has passed, and you’ll recover much quicker than if you had a general anaesthetic.
DB Dental practitioners are fully-trained in sleep dentistry.
Is sleep dentistry and general anaesthesia the same?
Sleep dentistry is very different to general anaesthesia. You’re conscious but very relaxed the whole time and you recover much faster. It’s also much safer than having a general anaesthetic which has complications for people with diabetes, obesity and other conditions, or those who smoke.
What treatments is sleep dentistry good for?
Sleep dentistry, or IV sedation is great for very anxious patients and for those who need a large amount of dental work done.
If you suffer extreme anxiety about dental work, IV sedation is the answer and you won’t recall it afterwards.
It’s also handy for patients who have either let work lapse or have major work to be done on a tight deadline, like a holiday. Everything can be done at once without the stress of undergoing several appointments close together.
I have dental anxiety
The first thing with dental anxiety is to know that it’s quite common for adults, as well as children. The second thing is that dentists see it often and are trained in making patients comfortable with getting the treatment done.
